Event Details

Just under a year ago, the Administrator of the U.S. Department of Homeland  Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Craig Fugate, announced that a decisive and welcome rethinking of the way FEMA would protect against, prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate against disasters would be instituted immediately. In a concept he named “Whole Community,” he made it clear that government alone did not have all the resources to handle all disaster activities without help. That help would require that government would include and engage non-profit organizations, the faith-based community and, most importantly, the private sector in emergency planning, response and recovery.

In FEMA Region IX, we want to help take those developing public/private partnerships to the next level.  We have partnered with numerous state and local agencies and private sector stakeholders to present the first Regional Leadership Private Sector Conference, this year focused on "What's In It for Us?" The goal of our conference is to showcase best practices of collaboration that also includes a series of “how-to” workshops that you can select from.

This fast paced one-day event will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building, Edward R. Royal Auditorium & Conference Center, 1301 Clay Street, Oakland, California, 94612.  Please bring a photo identification for security at the entrance and allow plenty of time to obtain your name badge and find your seat by 8:30 a.m.   Seating is very limited so register early. The conference site is accessible by BART at 12th Street City Center in Oakland, CA and public parking is available at multiple lots in the area.

Specifically, this conference will address two timely questions in public/private sector collaboration before, during and after a disaster:

1)    For the private sectorHow can partnering with local, county or state government really add to my bottom line or help me plan for, respond to and recover from a disaster to ensure that my organization has the highest chance of survival?

2)    For the public sector of local, county or state partnersHow have others in the government worked with the private sector successfully and what is the private sector really looking for from the government before, during and after a disaster?

This event will be presented in two parts:

Morning Sessions:  Best-Practice Case Studies

  • Proven public/private partnerships at the State level
  • Successful integration of the private sector in your EOC
  • Private sector “best practices” in working with government agencies

Afternoon Sessions:  Workshops Include

  • How to Motivate Senior Management to Collaborate with Government
  • How to Integrate Private Sector Liaisons in Your EOC
  • How Do You Use Social Media During Disasters?

  • How to Make Your Donations More Effective
